REMOVAL OF NORFOLK PINE
LANDSBOROUGH STREET, SOUTH WEST ROCKS

Council wishes to advise that it will be removing the Norfolk Pine in Landsborough Street, South West Rocks, which is situated outside the Uniting Church. Council staff have been monitoring the health of this tree for some time but, unfortunately, it has not improved and is starting to lose limbs. Recently, several concerned local residents also contacted Council about the condition of this tree so in the interests of public safety it has been decided to remove it at some stage in the next six weeks.

ASPHALT WORKS (Saturday)

Kempsey Shire Council wishes to advise that they will be undertaken Asphalt Works in the Frederickton area, on the 14 March 2009 (Weather Permitting). Roads which will be affected will be the intersection of Great North Road and Collombatti Road. All work will be carried out between the hours 7.00 am till 5.00 pm.  Various lanes will be closed during works, with Traffic Control will in place to direct traffic around worksite.

Council apologises for any inconvenience and would appreciate if public could avoid the area if possible.

ANNUAL REPORT

Please note copies of Council’s Annual Report for the 2007/08 financial year are now on display at the Kempsey Shire Library and its branches. If you would like a copy of this report they are available at the Customer First Centre. You can also access this report via Council’s website at www.kempsey@nsw.gov.au.

LOOK WHAT’S NEW ON COUNCIL’S WEBSITE …

Changes to Waste Services - some valuable information on upcoming changes to the waste services provided by Council, due to be implemented in April this year. A comprehensive booklet, which can be downloaded, is also available and gives a good overview of the waste services in Kempsey Shire. A link to this information can be found under News Items on the Homepage or under Services – Waste Management.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION REGISTER

Council is establishing a Community Central Consultation Register so that members of our community can register their interest in participating in focus group and other consultative opportunities. All you need to do to be included is fill in a registration form and return it to Council. Forms are available from Council’s Customer First Centre, all branches of the Shire Library, or online at www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au (go to Communications, then Forms Index (Alpha), and you’ll find under ‘C’, Central Consultation Register).

“LIVE LIFE” - CELEBRATE SENIORS WEEK (15-22 March)

Kempsey Shire Council celebrates NSW Seniors Week with a host of activities planned throughout the week which include:

SENIORS LUNCHEON
Council’s Seniors Luncheon will be held at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club at 11.00 am on Wednesday, 18 March 2009. Tickets must be produced at the door on the day. Melanie Parry will present the Music of Judy Garland and the Dame Vera Lynn Show.

SENIORS EXPO AT THE KEMPSEY SHOWGROUND
Kempsey Showground will be the venue for the Seniors Expo. Council will host events from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm on Thursday and Friday, 19 - 20 March 2009.

On Thursday, 19 March there will be a Tai Chi exhibition from 11.00 am to 12 noon in the main hall. A gopher scooter safety driving and instruction course will be held from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm in the showground ring.

The Seniors Art Prize, in two categories of Painting and Photography will be on display in the Showgrounds main hall. U3A will hold tutor workshops and have an information desk showcasing their courses.

A variety of displays and information will be available from community groups such as Kempsey Cookhouse, Kempsey Quilters, Friendship Force, Toast Masters, Macleay Community Care Options, Kempsey Shire Library and Medi Alarm.

You can also see and learn about table tennis which is a very popular and enjoyable game for all the family.

“LIVE LIFE” aims to encourage seniors to actively participate, so come along and bring your friends and experience what is available in our community.

COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT

Council provides residents and ratepayers with lots of opportunities to discover what is happening at Council. These are just some of the methods we use to communicate with you:

  • Weekly ads and Mayoral Column in the local press;
  • regular media releases sent to local and regional media;
  • Weekly program on Tank FM on Mondays at 10.10am;
  • On-site inspections, workshops and public meetings relating to specific subjects or issues;
  • Letterbox drops and mail-outs when appropriate;
  • Displays at events such as the Kempsey Show;
  • the production of comprehensive public documents including the Annual Report, Management Plan and the State of the Environment Report;
  • Meeting agendas and minutes;
  • Community Newsletters;
  • Council’s email mailing list; and
  • Surveys.

Many Council documents are available on our website at www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au and copies of some recent documents are often available at Customer First or at Shire Library branches in Kempsey, South West Rocks, Hat Head and Stuarts Point.

You are invited to attend Council meetings and arrangements can be made for you to address Council or, if this is not convenient, think about inviting a Councillor or staff member to attend a community meeting which you are involved with. EXTRAORDINARY MEETING – Monday, 16 March 2009

An extra-ordinary meeting of Kempsey Shire Council will be held on Monday, 16 March 2009, to further consider its draft budget for 2009-2010 year. The meeting will commence at 9.00am and the public are invited to attend.

The Agenda for this meeting will be available at Council's Customer First Centre and on Council's Website on Friday, 13 March.

HALF DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAYS 2009

The following public half day holidays have been gazetted by the NSW Department of Industrial Relations for the Kempsey Shire Council area:-

• Wednesday afternoon, 29 April 2009 for Kempsey Show
• Thursday afternoon, 7 May 2009 for Kempsey Cup.

Local public holidays are gazetted under the Banks and Banks Holidays Act of 1912. This act requires that banks are closed on local public holidays. An appointed local holiday under the Act benefits employees who have an industrial award, agreement or contract of employment which confers a right of paid absence (or penalty rates in lieu) on the local public holiday. In the absence of such express coverage within an applicable industrial instrument, the conferring of the benefit of a local public holiday to employees is entirely within the discretion of individual employers.

Master Locksmith Access Key system (MLAK)

The MLAK is a master key that fits into specially designed locks allowing 24 hour a day access to public toilets. Eligibility is restricted to people who have a disability or have written authority from a Doctor, a Disability Organisation, a Local Council or Community Health Centre, the Owner or management of a building with an accessible toilet on site. Eligible people can purchase a key that opens all accessible toilets displaying the MLAK symbol for only $15 at the Customer First Centre.
