AUSTRALIA DAY 2010 Australia Day is a community celebration! One way of celebrating is acknowledging the contributions made by others in our community. There are many people in our community who deserve to be nominated for an Australia Day award. As a trial for the 2010 Australia Day Awards we have decided to accept nominations all through this year. If you know of someone who would be worthy of one of these awards, consider nominating them. Categories for the awards are:- • Citizen Nomination forms can be obtained and nominations lodged online at www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au. The closing date to lodge nominations in the 2010 Australia Day Awards is Friday, 13 November 2009. DRAFT COMPREHENSIVE KOALA PLAN OF MANAGEMENT Council resolved at its meeting of 7 April 2009 to endorse a Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management for the Eastern Portion of the Kempsey Shire Local Government Area. The exhibition period will be 28 days from Tuesday, 14 April 2009, to Tuesday, 12 May 2009. The formal public exhibition including full copies of the draft Plan and associated koala habitat mapping may be viewed at Council’s Customer First Centre at the Civic Centre, 22 Tozer Street, West Kempsey, Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4.30pm. Copies of the draft Plan and mapping will also be available at the Kempsey, South West Rocks, Hat Head and Stuarts Point Libraries during normal opening hours. Exhibition documents are also available on Council’s website at www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au. A community information session will be held at the Council Chambers, Tozer Street, West Kempsey on Tuesday, 5 May 2009 from 6.00 to 7.00pm. Submissions on the draft Plan are to be addressed to the General Manager, Kempsey Shire Council, PO Box 3078, WEST KEMPSEY NSW 2440 and are to be submitted no later than close of business on Tuesday, 12 May 2009. Any interested person may inspect the draft Plan at the above location during the exhibition period. For enquiries, contact Nathan Hegerty on 6566 3200 during normal office hours. FOOTPATH & KERB/GUTTER WORKS - ELBOW ST Council advises that it will be undertaking Footpath & Kerb & Gutter works on the northern side of Elbow Street, between No 19 & No 35 from Monday, 20 April 2009 (weather permitting). All work will be carried out between the hours 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. Sections of footpath will be closed, with detours in place to direct pedestrians around worksite. Members of the public are advised that car parking will be unavailable during working hours in this area. Council apologises for any inconvenience. We thank you for your patience while we make improvements to this section of Pathway. Please contact the Works Office on 6566 3200 if you require any further information. ASPHALT WORKS - NIGHT WORK IN KEMPSEY AREA Council advises that it will be undertaking Asphalt Works in the Kempsey area commencing on Sunday 19 April 2009 until Friday 24 April 2009 (weather permitting). Roads affected will be Sydney & Verge St - Sydney & Verge Lane – Belgrave & Verge St – Verge & Eden St . All work will be carried out at night, between the hours 6:00 pm until 5:00 am. Various lanes will be closed during works, with Traffic Control in place to direct traffic around worksite. Council apologises for any inconvenience and would appreciate if the public could avoid the area if possible. For further information contact the Works Office on 65663200. HALF DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAYS 2009 The following public half day holidays have been gazetted by the NSW Department of Industrial Relations for the Kempsey Shire Council area:- • Wednesday afternoon, 29 April 2009 for Kempsey Show Local public holidays are gazetted under the Banks and Banks Holidays Act of 1912. This act requires that banks are closed on local public holidays. An appointed local holiday under the Act benefits employees who have an industrial award, agreement or contract of employment which confers a right of paid absence (or penalty rates in lieu) on the local public holiday. In the absence of such express coverage within an applicable industrial instrument, the conferring of the benefit of a local public holiday to employees is entirely within the discretion of individual employers. A record of consents may be inspected, without charge, at the Customer First Centre of the Kempsey Shire Council, Civic Centre, Tozer Street, West Kempsey, between 8.30 am and 4.30 pm from Monday to Friday (public holidays excepted). COMMUNITY GROUPS URGED TO APPLY NOW FOR CDSE FUNDS The Community Development and Support Expenditure (CDSE) Scheme is now taking Category 1 grant applications for projects within the Kempsey Shire. Funds for the CDSE scheme are provided by medium to large registered clubs. Last year registered clubs in NSW supported community and sporting groups to the tune of more than $100 million. Applications for Category 2 grants (including sporting, cultural and other activities) are administered directly by the clubs. The closing date for applications is 4.30pm, Friday 24 April 2009. YOUTH WEEK EVENTS (20 - 25 April) Kempsey Shire’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has some excellent events, with great prizes, planned for Youth Week celebrations in 2009 including:
Three heats will be held: Crescent Head Skatepark (Tuesday 21 April), Kempsey Skatepark (Wednesday 22 April) and South West Rocks Skatepark (Thursday 23 April) from 9am each day. Finals at Kempsey Skatepark on Saturday 25 April will feature music, and entertainment. A barbecue will also be available. Please note, a mark of respect will be paid as Anzac March passes. Entry fee on the day is a Gold Coin donation but it’s free if you hand in an entry form (available on Council’s youth webpage) before the day. Drug and Alcohol free event.
