COUNCIL URGES RESIDENTS TO REPORT CRIMES

Law & order what can I do about It?

“Where are the Police when we need them?” This question has been asked by residents all over our Shire, but instead of feeling angry and helpless why not be proactive and personally ring and report any incidences that you witness.

Effective policing everywhere in the world actually depends greatly on the citizens active assistance, which means we all have a responsibility to get involved.

So perhaps the first thing to do is rephrase this commonly heard question and ask instead, “What can I do about this?”

If a law is being broken and you have witnessed this, for example people behaving aggressively towards each other or loud unruly behaviour; do not hesitate to contact local Police on 6563 7199. For emergencies contact 000.

The added value of making such calls is that the incident then goes into Police records, which are used to determine our policing levels.

If it becomes well known that shop keepers and local residents will not tolerate this behaviour, these incidences will hopefully decrease.

So what can you do right now about crime in our Shire? Log the local Police station and emergency numbers into your mobile or place them by your phone, and be ready to report.

REPORT IT DON’T IGNORE IT.

ABANDONED SHOPPING TROLLEYS

Abandoned shopping trolleys can be a problem for the supermarkets who lose them, for the shoppers who want to use them and for the town which is affected by the image they portray about our town. If you see an abandoned shopping trolley please contact 1800 641 497 (if the trolleys are from Woolworths, Big W or Coles), 65627544 (for IGA trolleys) or visit this website www.trolleytracker.com.au. Some organisations offer tickets into lucky prize draws for the recovery of lost trolleys. For example, each month Trolley Tracker selects at random a person who reports a lost trolley to receive a $1,000 open order. While this is a great incentive to report abandoned trolleys the action you take to make a report is probably even more important for maintaining civic pride in our town.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE BREAKABLE ITEMS AT CEMETERIES

If you are visiting or placing flowers at any of the Shire’s cemeteries please remember that no breakable glass or ceramic containers/ornaments are permitted to be left at graves. These types of items break easily and this presents a risk of injury to visitors and Council staff who maintain the cemetery grounds. Your assistance in this would be appreciated.

Please note that Council staff will conduct periodic clean-ups at the Shire cemeteries to remove any breakable items.

DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION PUBLIC REGISTER

Council has introduced a free Development Application Public Register online service that provides details on all applications received by Council since 1980.

This service is not designed to monitor progress on the approval of individual applications but rather to allow members of the public to ascertain basic information, such as the development application number and copies of the Development Determinations from 2006. Being able to supply such details may save you time and money in search fees when seeking further information on a particular development from Council.

The information displayed will include Application Number, Applicant Name, Application Lodgement Date, Development Description, Property Location and Determination.

You will find the online DA register on our website at www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au, go to the heading ‘Departments’, click on ‘Sustainable Development Services’, then ‘DA Register’ . If you are unsure how the service works, or if you need more detailed information, please contact Council on 65663200.
