Aussie Backyard Bird Count & Photography Competition

Residents of the Macleay are encouraged to take part in this year’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count during National Bird Week from 23-29 October.

The Bird Count is a national tally which invites everyone to find an outdoor space and count all of the birds they see in a 20 minute timeframe.

Simply download the Aussie Bird Count app to participate. Not only will you be able to submit your count, you’ll also see live statistics and information on how many people are taking part near you as well as the number of birds and species counted.

Council is also inviting residents to submit their photos and take part in our Aussie Backyard Bird Count Photography Competition. Submissions are invited all throughout October.

Slim Dusty Country Music Festival

Join visitors from all over Australia for the 14th Annual Slim Dusty Country Music Festival being held at Kempsey Showground from 16-22 October. With concerts and events all week, why not bring the whole family for a day or the entire week as Kempsey celebrates Slim Dusty and Australian Country Music.


West Kempsey park redevelopment

Council’s redevelopment of West Kempsey park (cnr Cochrane and Leith Streets, West Kempsey) has now commenced. The park will be closed for up to 3 weeks while the work is carried out and there will be no access into the park via Eric Kennedy Street during this time.

The redevelopment works include construction of a new bike track, park benches, picnic table and public barbecue. New gardens, a swing set and a slippery slide will be installed once the park opens again in November.

Removal of trees

Council would like to advise of the planned removal of four camphor laurel trees located on Crown Reserve R82364, South West Rocks, in the vicinity of the property boundary of 19 Gregory Street.

The reason for the removal of these four trees is to allow for the construction of an access ramp and stairs leading from Gregory Street down to Back Creek reserve. A copy of the ramp and stair proposal can be found on Council’s website as well as a map showing the approximate location of the trees.

It is anticipated that the removal of these four trees will occur within the next month.

This week our crews will be working on:

Asphalting of Elizabeth Street is now complete
  • Bridge construction/maintenance: Install kerbs on Willi Willi Road as part of Quarry Bridge refurbishment (bridge reopening to all traffic on afternoon of Tuesday 10 October)
  • Flood mitigation maintenance: Install refurbished Ball’s Floodgates
  • Drainage/kerb/footpath maintenance: Excavate and prepare base on Warwick Avenue as part of kerb and gutter replacement; replace damaged footpath on Marsh Street
  • Bitumen road resealing/maintenance: Pothole patching of Plummers Lane and Kempsey streets
  • Bitumen road construction/rehabilitation: Extend culverts on Stuarts Point Road (Lukes Lane to Mighell Road) as part of widening and street rehabilitation; excavate South Street for pavement replacement as part of street rehabilitation
  • Gravel road maintenance grading: Willi Willi Road (Carrai Road to Toorumbee Road) and Saleyards Road
  • Roadside slashing: Kundabung area
  • Other works: Central Kempsey Sewage Treatment Plant access road and site earthworks; lay turf on south side Elbow Street; form and pour footpath on north side Elbow Street; construct access road and provide turning area within cell as part of new Waste Management Centre cell construction; bitumen seal Tozer Street/Marsh Street intersection; form and pour base for drainage culvert, woodchip cleared vegetation, install erosion and sediment control and strip topsoil as part of South Street extension from West Street to Gowings Hill Road.
