Your right to access government information - new GIPA Act replaces FOI Act from 1 July 2010 |

From 1 July 2010 the new Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 replaces the Freedom of Information Act. This new Act aims to ensure governments are more transparent and accountable. This GIPA Act applies to all councils and NSW government agencies. Councils are now required to proactively release a range of information on their websites. The changes mean that formal applications for information should be a last resort. From now on to access information from council you should follow these steps:

The NSW Office of the Information Commissioner has been set up to oversee the implementation of the GIPA Act and help councils and the public understand it. The Office of the Information Commissioner can be contacted on 1800463626. |
