The Kempsey Shire has a population of approximately 26,934 (as per 2001 census).
Over 44% of them are registered borrowers.
The Kempsey Library has a book stock of 64,328 (2005/06).
The Library has 6 full time and 4 part-time staff members,
as well as casuals who help out during peak times and holidays.
Book borrowings were over 214,744 during the year of 2005/06.

BORROWING

Your membership entitles you to borrow up to 20 items for a period of 3 weeks. Renewals may be requested if the item is not on RESERVE (except for games). However, there are some restrictions:

5 CDs per card, 5 cassettes per card, 3 issues of each magazine title per card,  2 items per non-fiction topic - per family,  
5 videos per card - 10 per family, 2 DVDs per card, 2 reference titles only overnight (1 hour before closing)  5 talking books,  5 CD ROMS per card,  5 junior tapes, 1 Computerized game.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES

The children’s library has picture books for younger children, early reading materials, school project information, fiction and general books as well as a comprehensive reference collection. The Children’s Librarian is available to assist children, parents and teachers in the use of the Library’s resources. Homework help is always available. Special activities during school holidays and author visits are organised most years.

Donations of recent books, especially paperbacks and magazines in good condition, are always welcome.

FREE PUBLIC ACCESS TO INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET

CONDITIONS OF USE FOR PUBLIC ACCESS COMPUTERS

Bookings are advisable:

- half hour or one hour sessions per day may be booked at the counter or by phone
- the session may be extended as long as nobody else requires the computer
- membership card must be produced at the beginning of the session

Use of the Internet requires that:

- viewing of indecent/inappropriate materials will terminate your use of the service

- accessing offensive material may be punishable by law

- Only 6 people at a time can use a PC, to avoid crowding.

- Kempsey Library has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible.

- Visitors are welcome to use the Internet if a PC is available, or by making a booking; however, they incur $3.00 per session,
  or if they choose to join the library, a once off fee of $3.00.

GENERAL RULES

Loan period for all items is 3 weeks, longer if requested.  Books can be renewed, provided they are not on RESERVE.  
There is a small fee charged for lost library cards.  Inter-library loan requests attract a small fee.
At times we need to pass on charges levied by other institutions.

INFORMATION SERVICES

AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS

Current, regularly updated statistics on National, State and Local demographics, tourism, agriculture, economics etc. For use in Library only.
 

COMPUTER SOFTWARE AND CD-ROM DATABASES

Databases include: summary and full-text journal articles covering most topics; family history, RTA driver’s knowledge test, animated stories and encyclopedias, OZJAC (Australian Courses and Careers), McGraw Hill Science and Technology Encyclopedia, Job Guide, Granger's Poetry etc.

ONLINE SEARCHING

May be arranged in advance on a cost recovery basis.

ABORIGINAL COLLECTION

Extensive range of materials (both text and audiovisual) covering all aspects of Aboriginal life, experience and history.

Also available are street directories, nationwide telephone directories, Agfacts and up-to-date legal information.

FAMILY/LOCAL HISTORY SERVICE

The Local Papers

- the Macleay Argus in hardcopy (last few years only)
- the Macleay Argus on microfilm (from 1885 )
- the Macleay Chronicle on microfilm (from 1899-1919)

Both microfilms are held at the South Kempsey Museum

MEMBERSHIP

Full membership of the Library is open to residents of the Kempsey Shire, and is free. You simply need to fill out a registration card and provide documentation confirming your postal and residential address. If you are under 16 a parent’s signature is required.

Visitors are welcome to join, but will have restricted membership and are required to pay a membership fee.

OVERDUE ITEMS

Overdue reminders are sent if you are late returning books, NO borrowing is permitted until items have been returned.
If a second overdue notice is received, a $10.00 per item charge may apply.

PAINTINGS

The Library has on permanent display paintings by a locally born artist, Mr Les Graham. The landscapes and figures were donated to the Kempsey Shire by the artist himself.
