Be Summer Smart these holidays

Media Release - 22 December 2017

An innovative education campaign, set to be launched on Boxing Day, aims to make the beaches and reserves of the Macleay Valley more pleasant during the busy summer period.

Kempsey Shire Council’s Acting General Manager, Daryl Hagger, said the campaign will be widely promoted to educate beach goers and users of the parks and reserves about taking five simple steps to play it “smart”.

“The Summer Smarts campaign will involve a combination of radio and print advertising and social media promotion,” Mr Hagger said.

“Along the lines of many public safety education campaigns, we are hoping the simple messages will remind locals and visitors alike to consider their own behaviour for the enjoyment of everyone around them.”

The campaign is based around the five smart holiday fun messages of:

  • Swim between the flags
  • Make sure you have a permit to drive on the beach
  • Always take note of parking and safety signs at beaches and reserves
  • Respect our public facilities
  • Take your rubbish to the bins provided

The Summer Smarts campaign will run in conjunction with Council’s ranger presence in the beachside towns and villages of the Shire, and will be actively promoted from Boxing Day throughout January.
