New waste education initiatives launched for schools and businesses

Kempsey Shire Council has recently introduced two new waste education initiatives targeting schools and small businesses to help minimise our environmental impact across the Shire.

The Macleay Sustainable Schools Network (MSSN) was launched this month with the first meeting attended by 32 teachers representing 11 schools and six early childhood learning centres.

The Network aims to provide learning opportunities, tools, resources, inspiration and support to develop and enhance sustainability initiatives.

MSSN meetings will be held once a term with guest speakers and activities arranged in response to participant-driven themes. Parents and students will also be invited to join some network activities.

Schools and early childhood learning centres participating in the MSSN will have access to teaching kits and resources. They will also receive Council assistance with conducting resource efficiency assessments and waste audits, developing and reviewing School Environmental Management Plans, and support with grant funding applications.

Council has also launched new online resources to help local small business to save money and minimise resource waste.

The Managing Business Waste site aims to guide small businesses through a waste review process and provide information about services and recycling options for common business wastes.

Council’s Coordinator Waste Services, Gavin Hughes, said everyone could play a part in managing their workplace waste, reducing costs and improving business efficiencies.

“Simple steps like switching to reusable packaging, avoiding single use items, and placing small recycling bins in convenient locations for both customers and staff to use can make a big difference in managing your impact on the local environment,” he said.
