Extra yellow bin recycling collection over Christmas and New Year

Community life - 18 December 2018

Kempsey Shire Council is helping local businesses, residents and visitors to continue their good recycling habits during the festive season by providing a bonus yellow bin collection over the fortnight that includes Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The extra collection means that kerbside serviced properties will have a weekly yellow bin recycling service for the period from Monday, 24 December 2018 to Friday, 4 January 2019. The usual fortnightly collection will then resume as normal from Saturday, 5 January 2019.

Council’s Coordinator of Waste Services, Gavin Hughes, said the additional recycling collection would help local businesses, residents and visitors to dispose of the extra paper, cardboard and container waste often generated during the festive period.

Recyclable containers can be made of plastic, glass or metal and include bottles, cans, jars or tubs with a recycling symbol on them.

“While our residents do a great job of recycling and reducing their waste, this time of year can mean extra paper, boxes and bottles as residents host visitors and people generally socialise more,” Mr Hughes said.

“We understand it’s a busy time for everyone so that’s why Council has introduced the extra collection services to make recycling a bit easier.

“Don’t forget to sort and save all of your gift wrapping, recyclable packaging and containers for the yellow bin.

“Council encourages the community to reduce, reuse, and recycle - but can only help with the last option by providing this extra yellow bin collection.”

Residents can also take advantage of the year-round free recycling disposal at Council’s Waste Management Centre located on Crescent Head Road or at the Transfer Stations located at South West Rocks, Stuarts Point and Bellbrook.

There are no changes to the rubbish and organics collection services. Normal services will be provided during this period, including collections scheduled on public holidays, even on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
