Youth Week (YW) celebrates it's 22nd year and and once again Kempsey Shire will be hosting some great activities and events during YW that will interest all ages. Youth week is about placing the program in the hands of young people to create an exciting celebration of creativity, energy and ideas.

The Art Competition

An art competition will be held throughout the week where artists will exhibit their art works in the Belgrave Street mall in the old pharmacy building. The age groups and categories are listed below.

All entry forms and artworks must be in to the Customer First Centre by 5 April 2010.

All entrants will be competing for their share in a huge prize pool.

The public will have the chance to vote on which artwork they like the best. Votes will be counted and the winner will be awarded the “Public Vote Prize”. We will also have 3 judges to determine the other winners.

The winning entries will be announced and displayed at the AMP UR SHIRE festival.

Time for Kids ‘Doing time to keep kids out of crime’ - Thursday, 15 April

Time 4 Kids logoDuring youth week in April 2010, the Kempsey PCYC will be running a major fundraiser promotion, called the PCYC ‘Time for Kids’ fund raiser.

The concept is that community leaders “Do Time to Keep Kids out of Crime" helping raise funds for Police youth programs and for urgently needed club equipment.

Members in the local community ‘DO TIME’ in a make shift PCYC jail cell in Clyde Street Mall and are reliant on their friends, family and professional contacts to raise “bail” in order to be released. Bail is set at $500 per person.

So come on down and watch community leaders ‘doing time for kids’ on Thursday, 15 April 2010.

Donations made $2 or above towards bail are tax deductable.

AMP UR SHIRE (Macleay Valley Youth Festival) - Saturday, 17 April

AMP UR SHIRE will be a massive youth festival on Saturday, 17 April 2010, consisting of a Battle of the Bands; Skate, BMX and Scooter Competitions; Car Show; announcing the winners of the Art Comp and live entertainment in the afternoon.

The festival will be held at Chappell Park from 10:00am - 4:00pm.

Buses will be running from:

  • South West Rocks
  • Crescent Head
  • Hat Head, Gladstone and Smithtown
  • Bellbrook, Willawarrin
  • Stuarts Point, Frederickton

Live Music and Entertainment

Following the morning events there will be a number of established DJ’s and Hip hop artists from around Australia for entertainment.

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the BandsLocal artists will be performing during the morning and early afternoon at the AMP UR SHIRE Festival for their chance to take away the title of Macleay Youth Musician of the year. There will be 3 judges who will determine who will receive,

  • 1st place
  • 2nd place
  • 3rd place
  • Encouragement award
  • Best original song prize.

The Skate competition will be held during the morning of the AMP UR SHIRE Festival.

Car Show

Car ShowThis year we will also be having a car show at the AMP UR SHIRE Festival. Categories include:-

  • Nicest Wheels
  • Biggest Bomb

Please note that all entries must be registered and road worthy. All entrants will have to fill out an entry form before or on the day.

Information Stalls

A number of community organisations will be having an information stall down at the festival to let the young people of the Macleay know exactly what specific organisations do for young people in the community. These organisations will also inform the young people about what programs and events they will be running throughout the year.

If you are a youth organisation or young person under the age of 25 and would like to have a stall at the AMP UR SHIRE Youth Festival, please feel free to contact me on 0413607449 to organise a position.

Slippry Sirkus inc. is a not for profit, community based, arts organisation with unique experience and in-depth knowledge of regional, rural and remote NSW and with broader experience in Australia’s many diverse communities.

They encourage, raise visibility and validate participants role within communities, especially young people ‘at risk’ or those disadvantaged by socio-economics’, age and culture. This is achieved through consultation, collaboration, partnerships, community cultural development and arts engagement practise.
