Try a Trade

Try a Trade

One of the means by which Kempsey Shire Council is working to increase the diversity in our workforce is by encouraging more women to apply for trade roles.

To assist with this, we are proud to announce the rollout of Try a Trade.

Try a Trade is a Civil and Construction short course designed for women, delivered by TAFE NSW in partnership with Kempsey Shire Council.

This is a free two-week course available to women who are:

  • residents of the shire
  • interested in learning practical trade skills
  • want to understand what it is like to work in a traditionally male-dominated field

The two-week course includes training in three units from the Civil and Construction training package at TAFE NSW Kempsey.

Students will then participate in a 1-2 week work experience with Council across various departments and job functions and Council hopes course participants will apply for permanent roles in our workforce.

Students will also get certified with a Statement of Attainment in Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry - Whitecard, which is a requirement for work on most job sites.

Expressions of interest will be taken via the TAFE website - Register your interest today by emailing TAFE NSW Business Development Manager: ben.lewis41@tafensw.edu.au

This training is funded under the NSW Government Skilling for Recovery initiative.
