Clyde Street car park and amenities upgrade

Overview

The wait for the much-anticipated upgrade to the Clyde Street car park and amenities is almost over with work commencing on 1 July.

In 2018 Council engaged with business owners and the community around the needs for a revitalisation of the Clyde Street car park and toilet facilities. Subsequently Council were successful in a funding application for $225,000 from the NSW Government under the Stronger Country Communities Fund.

Now, with the allocation of funds in Council’s Operational Plan, the $700,000 project has broken ground after the construction contract was awarded to Osborne and Dowling at the April 2020 meeting and land acquisitions required to complete the project were made, as resolved at the May 2020 meeting of Council.

This comprehensive project will:

  • Renew the Clyde Street car park area
  • Replace the ageing public toilet
  • Replace the water mains and water infrastructure under the car park
  • Create safer links to surrounding businesses for pedestrians
  • Create easier access for vehicles.

The project will be completed across five stages, with a projected final completion in May 2021, including a break for the Christmas period.

Stage One

Stage One of the upgrades commenced on Wednesday 1 July and is set to run until just before Christmas.

This will require a significant part of the car park to be closed off to the public. Council has created marked walkways and is advising alternative nearby parking options.

Water main upgrade

In the first weeks there will be additional impacts as Council’s water and sewer teams replace 150 metres of water mains and renew 12 water connections to buildings within the Clyde Street car park area.

To minimise impact on business, the work is scheduled to occur after hours between 6pm and 2am Monday to Friday. The entire car park will need to be closed at night while these works take place and access will be restricted.

Water should operate as normal during the day. Water will need to be switched off for one evening for several hours for each building and staff will alert businesses and residents about the specific date.

This initial part of stage one is expected to take four weeks to complete.

Amenities

Work on the new amenities block is scheduled to commence on 1 August and run until mid-October.

Car park

Work on the new car park and surrounds is scheduled to commence on 11 September and run until just before the December school holidays.

This includes demolishing the old amenities, tree garden removal, kerb constructions, footpath construction, laying asphalt for the new car park, new pavers, new gardens and new line marking.

Future stages

Stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 are scheduled to take place in 2021 with a significantly smaller area of the car park closed off.
