Shire’s water restrictions unaffected by recent rain

Media release - 11 February, 2020

The Kempsey Shire remains under Level 3 Water restrictions, despite heavy rainfall across the Macleay recently.

However, Council’s Manager Water and Sewer, Wes Trotter, said with more rain predicted, he isn’t ruling out a change to restrictions.

“Given the recent rainfall and the ensuing strong flow in the Macleay, we are optimistic regarding our water supply,” Mr Trotter said.

“We continue to refill our dam through our bore fields with the level currently at 66 per cent after the weekend.

“We must exercise caution in the next few days however, as heavy rainfall presents other complications, and we need to ensure the quality of this vital resource remains of a high standard.”

Mr Trotter said while the Kempsey Shire remains at Level 3 water restrictions, Council hopes to be in a position to reassess the level in the near future.

Council has been trucking water to the upriver townships of Willawarrin, Bellbrook and Thungutti and this is likely to continue for some time.

“After the rain event the river will take some time to return to an acceptable quality. Until then, the upriver communities will still need water to be trucked in,” he said.
