Separate fact from fiction as the Library Summer Reading Club returns

Media release - 27 November, 2020

The Summer Reading Club, a program that encourages participants to read, create and try out new things during the school holidays, will return in 2020 from 1 December.

After a year like 2020, everyone could benefit from a little more wonder in their lives and minds. Kempsey Shire Libraries have announced that the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Club will be ‘Tales of Wonder’, with a focus on myths, fairy tales and legends.

The Kempsey, South West Rocks and Stuarts Point libraries are all running the program from 1 December 2020 through to 31 January 2021 and it is open to children and young adults ages 3-18, who are current members of the library. Everyone who signs up will receive a free package filled with fun activities, goodies and more.

Every book, comic, graphic novel, and eBook that participants read, or have read aloud to them during the program will help them fill in their reading record. Once they have read 10 titles, they will be entered to win some exciting prizes.

Kempsey Shire librarian, Angie Meers, says “it’s been a challenging year for local children and young adults, and we want to provide a fun, engaging program that celebrates and incentivises literacy.

Participating in our ‘Tales of Wonder’ reading challenge reduces rates of summer ‘learning loss’ that can occur when children are away from their formal educational setting during the school holidays”.

There is lots of fun to be had through participation in the Summer Reading Club, with the program culminating in a free wrap-up party held at Kempsey’s Majestic Cinema for every child and young adult who submits a completed reading record.

Kempsey, South West Rocks and Stuart’s Point libraries are back to their usual operating hours, so children and their parents and carers can sign up for the Summer Reading Club from Tuesday 1 December and get started on their wonderous reading journey.

The Summer Reading Club is supported by FOLK (Friends of the Library Kempsey) who promote literacy programs in the Kempsey Shire.
