New speed zone changes for Kempsey Shire
Published on 06 February 2024
Four sections of road in the Kempsey Shire will have their speed limit decreased by 20 kilometres per hour, including Second Lane, Smithtown Road, Gowings Hill Road, and Plummers Lane, with speed zone changes applying when new speed limit signs are installed.
Transport for NSW are the determining authority for NSW speed zones, but the department works closely with local Councils and NSW Police to decide where speeds need to change on a local level.
Kempsey Council receives information and requests from residents throughout the year to vary local speed zones, either to the Local Traffic Committee or directly to staff.
The information is taken very seriously, as having appropriate speed zone settings is an important part of saving lives and reducing accidents on our roads.
Council then sends this information on to Transport for NSW, who determine whether a speed zone needs to be changed.
Second Lane: from 195 metres east of Griffins Lane, West Kempsey to Macleay Valley Way, Kempsey, will have its speed reduced from 100km/hr to 80km/hr to improve consistency with surrounding speed zones.
Smithtown Road: from Macleay Valley way, Bellimbopinni to 315 metres north of Church Lane, Seven Oaks, will have its speed reduced from 100km/hr to 80km/hr to improve consistency with surrounding speed zones.
Gowings Hill Road: from one kilometre west of Dungay Creek, Kempsey, to Sherwood Road, Sherwood, will have its speed reduced from 100km/hr to 80km/hr. This is a predominantly rural road with towns along its length. Previous crash history and the number of intersections and driveways have been taken into consideration. The speed limit change is expected to improve safety for residents and road users.
Plummers Lane: from 100 metres west of the boat ramp, Rainbow Reach, to South West Rocks Road, Jerseyville, will have its speed reduced from 100km/hr to 80km/hr to improve consistency with surrounding speed zones.
Please drive carefully and ensure that you always observe the posted speed limit signs on the road.
