Truth Telling will bring the community together
Published on 29 January 2025
Join us on Thursday, 13 February 2025, for a profound Truth Telling Session at the Nulla Nulla Regional Gallery, commemorating the 17th anniversary of the National Apology.
Featuring three Uncles from the Kinchela Boys Home, this event will provide a unique opportunity to hear their personal stories as part of the Stolen Generation, set against the moving backdrop of the gallery's current photography exhibition, We Were Just Little Boys.
This Truth Telling Session promises to be a deeply moving and educational experience. Three of the Uncles, Uncle Roger Jarrett, Uncle Richard Campbell, and Uncle Crow—featured in We Were Just Little Boys—will share their harrowing stories of being forcibly removed from their families and their time at the Kinchela Boys Home. These lived experiences offer an invaluable window into the enduring trauma of the Stolen Generation.
The photography exhibition itself captures the raw emotions of the Uncles as they returned to Kinchela Boys Home for the first time since childhood. Through powerful portraits juxtaposed with historic propaganda images, the exhibit highlights both the human cost of assimilation policies and the resilience of those who survived them.
This session not only deepens understanding of these personal and collective histories but also reinforces the importance of reconciliation.
Annette Young, Gallery Curator of the Nulla Nulla Regional Gallery, emphasised the event's role in fostering unity and understanding in the community.
“This Truth Telling Session is an important opportunity for us to hear directly from the Uncles about their lived experiences, to reflect on the lasting impacts of the Stolen Generation, and to continue our community’s journey toward reconciliation. I invite everyone to attend, to listen, and to be part of this essential conversation that helps us build a stronger, more unified community.”
We encourage all members of the community to attend this significant event. By coming together, we show compassion, respect, and solidarity on this important day.
Let us honour the Uncles’ bravery in sharing their truths and continue to strengthen the bonds of understanding and unity within our community.
