Background
As a precautionary measure, Council closed flood mitigation structures on Thursday 6 March in response to forecasted rainfall. Closing the gates on Thursday ensured they were closed safely under favourable conditions.
The following flood relief and cross over gates were closed to help mitigate potential flooding:
- Belmore River cross over and relief gates.
- Kinchela Creek cross over and relief gates.
- Christmas Creek cross over flood gates.
- Euroka Creek cross over flood gates.
With the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a Moderate Flood Warning for the Macleay River, residents are asked to monitor the situation closely and act accordingly.
Under normal conditions, these gates are left open to allow tidal movement and water aeration. However, they are closed when flooding is expected to help manage the flow of floodwater. While these measures help mitigate the impact of floods, they do not prevent them entirely.
