Volunteers at their best!

Mayor at SPADCO senior's feast

It’s been a long and anxious week right across the Macleay as we prepared for and dealt with the challenges of ex-tropical cyclone Alfred.

A minor to moderate flood is quite common for our huge catchment but this was my first disaster declaration as Mayor and the first time I’ve experienced the inner workings of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

I know I speak for the community in saying we are grateful for the team that come together in emergencies, bringing years of experience across all levels of government, community and emergency management. Lots of protocol and process guide the decisions during emergencies, but the actual people involved are brave locals who put their lives on hold to work long hours in stressful situations.

Thank you particularly to the volunteers of the SES, who are the lead agency for floods. These volunteers spend hours away from their families and their own properties to help keep our community safe. Rescues, repairs and door knocking for evacuations are so important during a flood and without these volunteers our community would be in much worse shape.

I’d encourage anyone who is looking to give back to consider becoming a volunteer with the SES. Meeting people, learning new skills and giving back to the towns we love are just some of the rewards you could expect by volunteering in many different roles with the SES.

My thanks also to the Council staff who worked long hours supporting the EOC, managing the road and bridge closures, monitoring water quality, fixing slips and operating the flood gates. Your efforts and skills are really appreciated.

Sandbags and weather induced cabin fever were kicked aside in Stuarts Point by mid-week when I was lucky enough to join the fantastic volunteers from SPADCO (Stuarts Point and District Community Organisation) for their Seniors Feast lunch. It was so heartwarming to share a beautiful homecooked meal with around 70 locals who were chatting and making new connections. Congratulations to the SPADCO team for such a successful initiative.

Take care,

Kinne
