Congratulations to Pat Conaghan on retaining the seat of Cowper in the federal election. Pat, an original Kempsey boy, has served our region for six years, and although he returns to Canberra from the opposition benches, he remains a well-connected, hardworking local who will represent us with integrity and passion.

Reflecting on the election, I feel incredibly proud—not just of our democratic system that gives everyone a voice, but of our community. Proud that we had multiple candidates willing to put their hand up to represent our community and take our needs Canberra. I’m also proud of all the people that got involved in the election, whether volunteering to help raise candidates’ profile, hosting corflute signs on their property or working at a polling booth. We’re lucky to live in a country where democracy is alive and well, and where respect and participation go hand in hand.

I also want to extend heartfelt thanks to our Council staff. This year has brought significant leadership changes, and several managers and senior leaders have stepped up to fill key roles while we’ve recruited for the vacant CEO and Director roles. My special thanks to Michael Jackson, Daniel Thoroughgood, and Liesa Davies who have been particularly impacted and generous with their skills and time.

Congratulations to Daniel Thoroughgood, who has now been appointed Council’s Director of Corporate and Commercial. A Kempsey High graduate and Council team member for over a decade, Daniel’s journey—from IT Team Leader to Group Manager, and now to the executive team—is a fantastic example of the career paths available at Council. I know Daniel continue to serve our community with dedication and vision.

New Council CEO Andrew Meddle, will commence the role on 2 June, having moved from South Australia. I know the staff and Councillors are looking forward to forming strong relationships with the new leadership team and continuing to work together on improving the shire.
