Mayor's Column: Supporting local business
Published on 09 July 2025
While it’s welcome news that the state and federal governments have made grants of up to $75,000 available to eligible primary producers and farmers affected by the May floods, small businesses in the Macleay are still waiting for similar support.
At the recent July Macleay Valley Business Chamber meeting, hosted by Tara Howard at the new Echo Voice and Data premises, more than 40 local business owners came together to share ideas and encouragement. Local presenters spoke about their back stories and business journeys, while others shared challenges and visions for the future as part of the Resilience Canopy project.
Despite the expected winter slowdown and ongoing flood recovery, the mood was positive. Our local businesses are run by ordinary mums and dads, working hard to keep our community vibrant and give us real choice.
Visiting many of our cafes, boutiques, specialty shops and larger businesses lately, I’m always so impressed by the quality, the variety of products available locally, and of course, the stunning views from icons like Netherby House.
Let’s all make a point of exploring our local businesses, galleries and markets these school holidays. Whether it’s a coffee, a little retail therapy or a new activity with the kids, every dollar spent locally helps.
The Kempsey Cash gift card is another great way to support local. Accepted at dozens of participating businesses, it keeps money circulating in our shire and celebrates what makes our community unique. Visit Kempsey Cash to learn more — it also makes a great gift idea beyond the holidays.
Finally, I encourage all business owners to visit Council’s Flood Disaster and Recovery page for updated funding details at ksc.pub/disaster-recovery, and to complete the Business Impact Survey at ksc.pub/business-impact-survey. Evidence of the flood impact will help build a stronger case for the additional support our local businesses need.
