This week’s column introduces Kempsey Shire Council’s new Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Meddle.

Earlier this year I was appointed as Kempsey Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer. My background is in planning and project management, with degrees in countryside, urban and transport planning, along with qualifications in environmental assessment and project delivery.

My journey to the Macleay has taken me from drought in South Australia to the flooding rains of New South Wales. Before that, I spent 15 years working in councils across the United Kingdom, followed by 13 years in local and state government in South Australia.

Since arriving, I have been struck by the strength, resilience and generosity of this community. In just a few months, I’ve witnessed the May floods and a severe storm, and I have seen firsthand how quickly people pull together in difficult times. It has been a privilege to experience the Macleay’s community spirit in action.

I believe this shire deserves an excellent council, one built on strong partnerships between councillors, staff and the community. Like many regional councils, we face challenges—managing finances, attracting and retaining skilled staff, and ensuring we deliver value to our ratepayers. These are not small tasks, but together they can be achieved. I bring ideas, our staff bring ideas, and I know the community has ideas and aspiration – we want to work with you towards a brighter future.

Right now, I am in the listening phase—meeting with staff, connecting with regional partners, MPs and government representatives, and most importantly, getting out and about in the community. My focus is not just on learning the geography of the shire, but also understanding the people and stories that make it unique.

If you would like to know more about Council’s work or share your ideas, please contact my office. Together, we can build a council that reflects the resilience, spirit and aspirations of our community.
