Sixteen people have officially become an Australia Citizens at the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony in Kempsey on Wednesday.

The proud individuals embraced and pledged their loyalty to the Australian way of life at the Slim Dusty Centre.

Kempsey Shire Mayor, Leo Hauville, said it was fantastic to welcome and stand as one with the newest citizens to the Kempsey Shire.

“We know the contributions and value you will all bring to Australia and the Kempsey Shire will be invaluable. We celebrate this incredible milestone of yours and look forward to the future.”

“As new citizens, you are all part of the story of Australia now and we welcome you with open arms to this great nation.”

Each year the Shire’s largest citizenship ceremony takes place at our Australia Day event and includes:

  • an official welcome
  • an address by the Mayor of Kempsey Shire or a special guest
  • the Australian Citizenship Pledge
  • the presentation of certificates of Australian citizenship
  • the presentation of a gift to all new citizens
  • the singing of the national anthem, Advance Australia Fair.

To become a citizen, you must make the Australian Citizenship Pledge at your citizenship ceremony. In doing so, you are making a public commitment to Australia and accepting the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.

The event was jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government through the Reconnecting Regional New South Wales Grant.
