Calling all artists! Sculpture in the Gaol is back and looking for outstanding works of art.
Kempsey Shire Council is coordinating this year’s exhibition at the iconic Trial Bay Gaol, which will run for a month from 27th August 2023.
Well known Dunghutti artist Blak Douglas, 2022 Archibald Prize winner, will be on the judging panel, with a first place prize of $5000 up for grabs.
We encourage artists to submit an exhibit or host a workshop through an EOI here ksc.pub/sitgeoi.
The opening weekend of the exhibition is always a special occasion and this year will be no exception. The exhibition will open with a gala event on Saturday night, with artist-led workshops for all levels of creative ability to be held across the weekend.
Peter Allen, Kempsey Shire Council Group Manager Commercial Business, is keen for artists of all kinds to get involved in both exhibiting their work and running workshops using their creative expertise.
“Sculpture in the Gaol is an important event in the Macleay Valley cultural calendar,” said Mr Allen.
“Not only does it provide an opportunity for artists to showcase their work in the stunning, iconic surrounds of the gaol, but it is a much-loved community event, popular with young and old.”
“We’re particularly excited about the artist-led workshops on the opening weekend, which is a new addition to the event. We envisage a wide variety of creative modalities, such as painting, sculpture, sand art, weaving and more. And don’t forget – entrance to the sculpture exhibition on the opening weekend is free of charge.
Council urges residents and visitors alike to mark their calendars for this special event, and to visit their website and follow their social media channels for updates.
