Arakoon Cemetery upgrade
Summary
Works have begun on the upgrade of Arakoon cemetery, with an improved design allowing rehabilitation of roads, formalised parking, as well as opening up a significant number of new memorial sites.
Timeframe
Works began in November 2024 and are expected to be completed by June 2025, weather and contractor availability permitting.
Funding
Council received grant funding, jointly funded by the Commonwealth and NSW Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to support the delivery of this project.
Progress to date
May 2025
Despite the ongoing wet weather, work is progressing and quotes are being gathered for the next phase of the project—the construction and installation of the columbarium walls.
February 2025
Council has been working through more detailed planning of these upgrades and has developed a Revised Concept plan, consistent with the original Master Plan.
The rehabilitation of roads, installation of formal footpaths, and establishment of designated parking areas have been completed.

Background
The Arakoon Cemetery Master Plan was adopted in 2022, showing concepts to improve and expand Arakoon Cemetery.
The detailed design phase has allowed the original Master Plan to be adapted to reduce the impact on the native trees and site conditions, as well as roads and drainage improvements, and additional memorial walls.
