Willawarrin Water Treatment Plant

Upper Macleay

We are building a new water treatment plant within the Willawarrin showground precinct to replace the existing aged treatment process and system.

The new water treatment plant will reduce the risk to water safety, security and sustainability for Willawarrin by meeting relevant Standards and regulations for water supply, removing dependence on domestic rainwater systems and water carting and reducing operational risks.

Project update - start of works

We are excited that work on the new water treatment plant is about to start. Our contractor LC Water will be establishing their work site in March 2025. The project includes:

  • building the new water treatment plant
  • connecting the new plant to existing services
  • local contractors installing permanent site fencing
  • commissioning the new plant for operations.

Works are due to be completed by early 2026. Most activity will be carried out from 7am until 6pm, Monday to Friday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm, weather permitting. If we need to work outside these times, we will let you know.

How will this affect you?

You may notice additional noise, local traffic movements and construction vehicles in the Willawarrin Showground Precinct. We will have traffic controls in place to make sure our vehicles are moving safely around the site. Our aim is to minimise inconvenience to you.

Project costs and funding

You may have heard in the news recently that the cost of the project has increased. Construction projects have not been immune to inflation, however, design and construction of this project has been through a competitive tender process with value for money one of the key criteria.

Although the tender prices were higher than expected, we have worked with the NSW Government's Safe and Secure Water Program to increase the value of our funding deed.

We have also applied for additional federal government funding for our water and sewer program of works to help alleviate cost increases we are experiencing.

Project benefits

  • Reduce risks to water safety, security and sustainability and improving drinking water supply
  • Mitigate ongoing issues experienced by customers relating to staining and taste
  • Reduce operational and maintenance costs associated with water carting and provide teams with safer work environments.
