Garage Sale Trail: A Community Movement for People & Planet
Every November, something magical happens across Australia. Streets and suburbs come alive with colour and chatter as front lawns transform into treasure troves, neighbours reconnect, and pre-loved items find new homes.
This is Garage Sale Trail -a national celebration of community, creativity and reuse.
Backed by more than 80 local councils, the NSW Environment Protection Authority and the Queensland Government, the Trail has grown into Australia’s biggest secondhand treasure hunt. Along the way, it has collected environmental awards, been adopted by the UK Government, and even seen sales pop up in places like MONA in Tasmania, NSW Parliament House, the WA Ballet and Opera Australia.
But the heart of Garage Sale Trail isn’t in the headlines—it’s in communities like yours. It’s in the driveway where a child discovers their new favourite toy. In the hall where neighbours meet for the first time. In the laughter, bargains and conversations that spark when people come together.
And the impact is real. In 2024 alone:
Nearly 300,000 Australians took part in more than 13,000 garage sales.
Over 418 tonnes of items were saved from landfill, keeping precious resources in use.
More than $3.9 million was raised for households, charities and community groups.
This is what happens when reuse becomes a celebration.
In 2025, the Trail returns on 8–9 and 15–16 November. Whether you host a sale, shop the trail, or do both, you’ll be part of a movement that’s good for your wallet, your community and the planet.
